Paris, France; May 25, 2025: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), a France-based human rights organization, expresses deep concern and strongly condemns the attempted murder case filed in Dhaka on January 5, 2025, by a member of Jamaat-e-Islami against 14 prominent lawyers, 7 journalists, and a total of 90 citizens.

JMBF believes this case is clearly politically motivated, vindictive, and an attempt to intimidate professionals for carrying out their duties—an act that violates the Constitution of Bangladesh and internationally recognized human rights standards declared by the United Nations.

She was detained by immigration police on May 18, 2025, at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, just before boarding a flight to Thailand. In addition, fabricated charges filed in three separate cases on April 30, April 28, and April 20 against 32 other prominent actors represent a broader, orchestrated campaign to silence dissent and suppress artistic and political expression in Bangladesh.

Paris, France | April 27, 2025: France-based human rights watchdog, JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), expresses its gravest concern and unequivocal condemnation regarding the brutal custodial torture of Barrister Turin Afroz during her police remand at Uttara West Police Station between April 8 and 12, 2025.

According to credible reports from reliable sources and multiple leading newspapers in Bangladesh, Barrister Turin Afroz — a distinguished advocate and former prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) — was subjected to severe physical and psychological abuse while in police custody. Two uniformed female police officers, alongside a male and a female individual in civilian clothes, allegedly perpetrated acts of violence against her. She was viciously beaten with lathis (batons) on her thighs and legs, kicked, slapped, punched, and subjected to repeated physical assaults on the back parts of her body.

BANGLADESH: JMBF Strongly Condemns Arbitrary Detention of Environmental Activist and Model Meghna Alam Under Draconian Law

Paris, France | April 13, 2025 — France-based human rights watchdog JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest and preventive detention of environmental activist, model, and Chairperson of the Miss Bangladesh Foundation, Meghna Alam, under the Special Powers Act of 1974—a controversial law long criticized for suppressing dissent.

Meghna Alam, also crowned Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020, was detained from her residence in Dhaka on April 9, 2025, and transferred to Kashimpur Jail following a closed-door court hearing on April 10. Her 30-day preventive detention was ordered under the Special Powers Act, based on vague allegations that she was spreading misinformation and threatening diplomatic relations.

The police’s deployment of sound grenades, tear gas, and baton charges against unarmed workers demanding their rightful dues before Eid ul-Fitr, resulting in approximately 40 workers being injured, is a flagrant violation of human rights and an unacceptable abuse of power.

JMBF urges an immediate investigation into the police's excessive use of force, accountability for those responsible, and the fulfillment of workers' demands for unpaid wages, Eid bonuses, and maternity leave. These highly respected legal professionals, known for their legal expertise and advocacy for justice, have been targeted by malicious and politically driven cases aimed at suppressing their voices and discrediting their professionalism.

JMBF asserts that the charges filed against these individuals include severe accusations such as murder, attempted murder, assault, bomb explosions, detonating explosives, vandalizing vehicles, and involvement in violent attacks on peaceful student protesters. These accusations are completely baseless and part of a coordinated attempt to undermine the integrity of the legal profession in Bangladesh. Jummon (26) by joint forces, led by Bangladesh Army personnel, in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka on the night of February 19, 2025. This horrifying incident raises serious alarm about the ongoing practice of extrajudicial killings and the disturbing disregard for human rights under the pretence of law enforcement, signifying a grave violation of fundamental human rights.

JMBF asserts that the extrajudicial killings of Miraz and Jummon flagrantly violate both Bangladesh's Constitution and international human rights law. Bangladesh is a signatory to international agreements such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Convention Against Torture (CAT), which explicitly prohibit arbitrary executions and the use of excessive force by authorities. JMBF asserts that state-sponsored violence against unarmed civilians, including women, is a direct attack on freedom of speech, peaceful assembly, and the rule of law.
