Paris, France; October 10, 2025: On Friday, 10 October, the 23rd World Day Against the Death Penalty, JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) calls upon the Bangladeshi government to urgently reconsider its continued use of capital punishment. The number of prisoners on death row in Bangladesh has risen sharply over the years: from 1,009 in November 2011 to over 2,000 in June 2021, with at least 169+ death sentences in 2022 and 248+ in 2023. In 2025, more than 2,400 individuals currently remain on death row. These figures reflect systemic issues, including trials plagued by delays, inadequate legal representation, and procedural irregularities, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.

BANGLADESH ALERT: JMBF Calls for the Withdrawal of the Death Penalty Provision in the Proposed Anti-Enforced Disappearance Law

Paris, France; 10 September 2025: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) expresses deep concern over the incorporation of the death penalty as the maximum punishment in the proposed Anti-Enforced Disappearance Law, approved by the Interim Government of Bangladesh Advisory Council in its meeting on 28 August 2025, which is clearly contrary to fundamental human rights principles.

While strict legislation is necessary to prevent serious crimes such as enforced disappearances, JMBF firmly believes that the death penalty is never justifiable under any justice system. Capital punishment stands in direct contradiction to the principles of human rights, the right to life, and justice. It allows no scope for remedy and, in cases of wrongful conviction, causes irreparable harm.

STATEMENT: World Day Against Death Penalty 2024 – JMBF Firmly Calls for the Abolition of Death Penalty in Bangladesh

October 10, 2024 | Paris, France: On the occasion of World Day Against Death Penalty 2024, JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) firmly calls upon the present Interim Government of Bangladesh, led by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Laureate for Peace, to abolish the death penalty in all its forms in Bangladesh.

JMBF believes that the death penalty is an irreversible and inhumane punishment that has no place in a just and civilized society. Our stance aligns with both national and international legal frameworks that prioritize human dignity, the right to life, and fairness. The Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, particularly Article 32, guarantees the right to life and personal liberty, yet the death penalty stands in stark opposition to this fundamental right.

Statement: JMBF Once Again Calls for Removal of Death Penalty Provision in Ansar Battalion Act, 2023

Paris, France; October 25, 2023: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), an independent, non-partisan, non-profit human rights organization based in France, expresses deep concern regarding the placement of the Ansar Battalion Act, 2023, with the inclusion of the death penalty provision in the National Parliament of Bangladesh on October 23, 2023. This proposed law imposes the death penalty as the maximum punishment for various offenses, including mutiny and provocation for rebellion.

Statement: JMBF Expresses Grave Concerns over the Inclusion of the Death Penalty in Ansar Battalion Act, 2023

Paris, France– JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) is gravely concerns over the Cabinet approval of the Ansar Battalion Act, 2023, by the Government of Bangladesh on September 4, 2023, which includes the death penalty as the maximum punishment for various offenses, including mutiny and provocation for rebellion.

The decision to uphold the death penalty as the ultimate form of punishment under this new legislation is a matter of profound concern, and JMBF strongly demands for reducing the maximum penalty from death to life imprisonment until the end of natural life.

বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশের ন্যায় বাংলাদেশেও খুন ও ধর্ষনের মত কিছু গুরুত্বর ও ঘৃনিত অপরাধ, যা কোন ব্যক্তির কখনো সংঘটন করা উচিত নয়, সেসকল অপরাধের জন্য রাষ্ট্র অপরাধীকে মৃত্যুদণ্ডের মত গুরুদণ্ড প্রদান করে থাকে। যদিও সাধাররণত প্রাপ্ত বয়স্ক গুরুত্বর অপরাধের জন্য দায়ী ব্যক্তিদের মৃত্যুদণ্ডের মত গুরুদণ্ড প্রদান করা হলেও বিশ্বের কিছু কিছু দেশে ১৮ বছরের কম বয়সি অপরাধীকেও মৃর্ত্যুদণ্ডের মত নিষ্ঠুর, অমানবিক এবং অবমাননাকর শাস্তি প্রদান করে থাকে।   

যদিও এখন বিশ্বের অধিকাংশ রাষ্ট্র মৃর্ত্যুদণ্ডের মত নিষ্ঠুর, অমানবিক ও অবমাননাকর শাস্তি বিলোপের পক্ষে তারপরও বাংলাদেশ সহ বিশ্বের ৪২টি দেশে এখনো মৃর্ত্যুদণ্ড প্রদান করা হয়ে থাকে। যদিও তাদের মধ্যে ৮টি দেশে সাধারণ কোন অপরাধের জন্য নয় বিশেষ প্রকৃতির গুরুত্বরও ঘৃণিত অপরাধের জন্য মৃর্ত্যুদণ্ড প্রদান করা হয়ে থাকে। অন্যদিকে বিশ্বের প্রায় ৮০% অর্থাৎ১৫৫টি রাষ্ট্র আইনগত ভাবে মৃর্ত্যুদণ্ড সম্পূর্ণরূপে বাতিল করেছে বা বাস্তবিকভাবে মৃর্ত্যুদণ্ড কার্যকর করার উপর  স্থগিতাদেশ প্রদান করেছে।

BIHR and JusticeMakers Bangladesh strongly urge to Bangladesh Government to repeal the provision of death penalty in the existing law.

On the occasion of the 20th World Abolition of Death Penalty Day 2022, Bangladeshi human rights organizations Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) and JusticeMakers Bangladesh have called for the abolition of all clauses containing the provision of death penalty in the existing laws in Bangladesh. Today, on October 10, 2022, BIHR and JusticeMakers Bangladesh urged to the government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh to abolish death penalty.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, Secretary General of JusticeMakers Bangladesh and BIHR, has demanded for life imposing life imprisonment in serious crimes instead of death penalty to avoid cruel, inhuman and humiliating punishments like death penalty.
