Paris, France | 15 June 2025 — JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), a France-based human rights organization, expresses deep concern and strong condemnation over the violent attack and vandalism that took place on 10 June at the historic Rabindra Kachharibari in Shahzadpur, Sirajganj. In this incident, an agitated mob damaged the auditorium’s windows and doors, vandalized the custodian’s office and library, and assaulted staff members.
JMBF firmly believes this attack is not only an assault on a heritage site but also a direct blow to Bangladesh’s cultural history, freedom of thought, and secular values. Considering the nation's deep emotional and respectful connection to this site—closely associated with the memory of the world poet Rabindranath Tagore—JMBF demands a prompt investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
Robert Simon, renowned French human rights activist and Chief Advisor of JMBF stated, “This kind of attack is not just against a historical structure, but against human dignity and cultural heritage. We stand in full solidarity with the people of Bangladesh.”
Advocate Shahinur Islam, Bangladeshi human rights lawyer and founding president of JMBF added, “Rabindranath Tagore is an integral part of Bangladesh’s cultural heritage. Preserving the places associated with his legacy is our national and moral duty. This attack strikes at the core of our national identity. We demand a swift investigation and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.”
JMBF calls on the Government of Bangladesh, the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, and all relevant authorities to take immediate and effective action. The organization also urges civil society, cultural activists, and human rights groups to unite in strong and peaceful resistance.

Attack on Rabindra Kachharibari in Shahzadpur, Sirajganj – Vandalism of Custodian’s Office and Library
On the afternoon of Tuesday, 10 June, a group of unruly individuals attacked the Rabindra Kachharibari in Shahzadpur, Sirajganj, following a verbal altercation between a visitor and security personnel. The mob proceeded to vandalize the windows and doors of the auditorium.
The incident stemmed from an earlier dispute on Sunday, 8 June. Visitor Shah Newaz, along with his wife and nephew, toured the Kachharibari. Although he paid the entrance fee, he was asked to pay an additional parking fee for his motorcycle. However, he was not issued a token, which led to an argument with the security guards. During the altercation, the visitor was allegedly assaulted by the guards.
In response to the incident, on 10 June, agitated locals staged a protest and human chain in front of the Shahzadpur Press Club. Later, they marched through the town and attacked the Rabindra Kachharibari. The mob vandalized the custodian’s office, the library, and the auditorium’s windows and doors. Sirajul Islam, an employee responsible for electrical and garden maintenance, was also physically assaulted.
It is important to note that the Rabindra Kachharibari, located in Shahzadpur upazila of Sirajganj, is a nationally significant historical site. Constructed in Indo-European architectural style, this two-storied building is now known as the Rabindra Memorial Museum. In 1840, Prince Dwarkanath Tagore, grandfather of the poet, purchased the Shahzadpur estate, thereby acquiring the Kachharibari. Rabindranath Tagore later resided there while managing the family’s estate. In 1969, the Department of Archaeology declared the building a protected heritage site.

এর আগে ৮ জুন, রবিবার বিকেলে দর্শনার্থী শাহ নেওয়াজ তার স্ত্রী ও ভাতিজাকে নিয়ে কাছারিবাড়ি পরিদর্শনে গেলে, প্রবেশমূল্য বাবদ টিকিট দিলেও মোটরসাইকেল পার্কিং ফি নেওয়ার পর কোনো টোকেন না দেওয়ায় নিরাপত্তাকর্মীদের সঙ্গে তাঁর বাকবিতণ্ডা হয়। একপর্যায়ে নিরাপত্তাকর্মীরা তাঁকে লাঞ্ছিত করে।
এই ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করে ১০ জুন দুপুরে শাহজাদপুর প্রেস ক্লাবের সামনে বিক্ষোভ মিছিল ও মানববন্ধন করে বিক্ষুব্ধ জনতা। পরে তারা শহরের বিভিন্ন সড়ক প্রদক্ষিণ করে রবীন্দ্র কাছারিবাড়িতে গিয়ে হামলা চালায়। কাস্টডিয়ানের অফিস, লাইব্রেরি ও অডিটোরিয়ামের জানালা-দরজা ভাঙচুর করা হয় এবং বিদ্যুৎ ও বাগান পরিচারক সিরাজুল ইসলামকে মারধর করা হয়।
প্রসঙ্গত, সিরাজগঞ্জের শাহজাদপুর উপজেলায় অবস্থিত রবীন্দ্র কাছারিবাড়ি একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ঐতিহাসিক স্থাপনা। ইন্দো-ইউরোপীয় স্থাপত্যশৈলীতে নির্মিত এই দোতলা ভবনটি বর্তমানে ‘রবীন্দ্র স্মৃতি জাদুঘর’ নামে পরিচিত। ১৮৪০ সালে কবি রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের পিতামহ প্রিন্স দ্বারকানাথ ঠাকুর শাহজাদপুরের জমিদারি কিনে নিলে এই কাছারিবাড়ি তাঁদের মালিকানায় আসে। পরবর্তীতে জমিদারি তদারকির কাজে রবীন্দ্রনাথ এই বাড়িতে বসবাস করতেন। ১৯৬৯ সালে প্রত্নতত্ত্ব অধিদপ্তর এই ভবনটিকে সংরক্ষিত পুরাকীর্তি হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে।

Paris, France | 15 juin 2025 — JusticeMakers Bangladesh en France (JMBF), une organisation française de défense des droits humains, exprime sa profonde inquiétude et condamne fermement l'attaque violente et les actes de vandalisme survenus le 10 juin contre le site historique de la Rabindra Kachharibari à Shahzadpur, dans le district de Sirajganj. Lors de cet incident, une foule en colère a saccagé les fenêtres et les portes de l’auditorium, vandalisé le bureau du conservateur ainsi que la bibliothèque, et agressé des membres du personnel.Le JMBF estime que cette attaque constitue non seulement une atteinte à un site patrimonial, mais également une agression directe contre l’histoire culturelle du Bangladesh, la liberté de pensée et les valeurs laïques du pays. Étant donné l’attachement émotionnel et le respect profond de la nation pour ce lieu – étroitement lié à la mémoire du poète universel Rabindranath Tagore – le JMBF demande une enquête rapide et des sanctions exemplaires contre les responsables.

Le mardi 10 juin, dans l’après-midi, un groupe d’individus hostiles a attaqué la Rabindra Kachharibari à Shahzadpur, Sirajganj, à la suite d’une altercation verbale entre un visiteur et des agents de sécurité. La foule a saccagé les fenêtres et les portes de l’auditorium.
L’incident trouve son origine dans une dispute survenue le dimanche 8 juin. Le visiteur, Shah Newaz, accompagné de son épouse et de son neveu, visitait le site. Bien qu’il ait payé son billet d’entrée, il a été contraint de payer un supplément pour le stationnement de sa moto, sans recevoir de reçu, ce qui a entraîné une altercation avec les agents de sécurité. Il convient de rappeler que la Rabindra Kachharibari, située dans l’upazila de Shahzadpur, district de Sirajganj, est un site historique d’importance nationale. Construit dans un style architectural indo-européen, ce bâtiment à deux étages est aujourd’hui connu sous le nom de Musée commémoratif Rabindra. En 1840, le prince Dwarkanath Tagore, grand-père du poète, acheta le domaine de Shahzadpur, ce qui permit à la famille Tagore d’acquérir la Kachharibari. Rabindranath Tagore y résida par la suite pour superviser la gestion du domaine. En 1969, le Département d’archéologie a classé le bâtiment comme site patrimonial protégé.
