The International Observatory for Lawyers expresses its deep concern regarding the situation of Shahanur Islam, a lawyer and human rights defender who has received death threats in Bangladesh. Mr. Islam is a lawyer and the executive director of the Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights. He has accomplished extensive human rights work notably relating to minorities’ rights in Bangladesh.In January 2011 Mr. Islam undertook a fact-finding mission on the violation of minorities’ rights in Jharbhanga, in the Thakurgaon district. During this mission Mr. Islam and his two fact-finding officers were physically attacked,

 আইন-শৃংখলা রক্ষাকারী বাহীনির হাতে ক্রমাগত মানবাধিকার লংঘনের ঘটনায় জাস্টিসমেকার্স বাংলাদেশ উদ্বিগ্ন। জাস্টিসমেকার্স বাংলাদেশ অত্যন্ত উদ্বেগের সাথে লক্ষ্য করছে যে, গত কিছুদিন যাবৎ আইন শৃংখলা রক্ষাকারী বাহীনি তাদের কাজকর্ম ও আচরনে বেপরোয়া ও আক্রমনাত্বক হয়ে উঠেছে। গত ২৬ তারিখে আগারগাঁও মহিলা পলিটেকনিক ইন্সটিটিউট এর সামনে পেশাগত দ্বায়িত্ব  পালন কালে পুলিশ কর্তৃক তিন ফটো সাংবাদিককে নির্যাতন করে। তাছাড়া, গতকাল ঢাকা মূখ্য মহানগর হাকিমের আদালতে বিচার প্রার্থী এক মহিলাকে আদালত সংলগ্ন পুলিশ ক্লাবে নিয়ে পুলিশের উর্দ্ধতন সদস্যের উপস্তিতিতে পুলিশ সদস্য তার শ্লীনতাহানী করে এবং সে ঘটনার সংবাদ সংগ্রহকারী সাংবাদিক ও প্রতিবাদকারী আইনজীবীদের শারীরিকভাবে নির্যাতন করে।

Shahanur Islam assits the minority women victim of torture to get justice

The High Court has summoned the police superintendent of Madaripur and the officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajoir Police Station for allegedly torturing a housewife. The summons was issued against police super Sarder Tamijuddin Ahmed and OC M Moshiur Rahman by a bench of justices A H M Shamsuddin Chowdhury and Sheikh Zakir Hossain on Tuesday following a writ petition filed by housewife Shila Mollick.

I would like to express my concern for human rights defender Advocate Shahanur Islam, who has recently received threats against his life. According to information I received from Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD), these threats are linked to an incident earlier in January this year when Adv. Islam was attacked during a fact finding mission in Thakurgaon district. He and his two fact-finding officers were physically attacked, threatened and had all their belongings looted. One of the perpetrators of the January attacks has recently got out of jail custody and is said to be responsible for the death threats Adv. Islam is now experiencing.

নারীশ্রম কি অস্বীকৃতই থেকে যাবে!!!

বাংলাদেশের মোট জনসংখ্যার প্রায় অর্ধেকই নারী। প্রচলিত জাতীয় আয় (জিডিপি) পরিমাপের ক্ষেত্রে পুরুষের উৎপাদনশীলতার যেখানে প্রায় ৯৮ শতাংশ হিসেবে ধরা হয়, সেখানে নারীর উৎপাদনশীলতার মাত্র ৪৭ শতাংশ গণনা করা হয়। গৃহস্থালী কাজ প্রায় এককভাবে নারীরা সম্পন্ন করে থাকে। কিন্তু কোথাও গৃহস্থালী কাজকে অর্থনৈতিক কাজ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয় না। তাই আমাদের জাতীয় অর্থনীতি থেকে নারীর এই অদৃশ্য বিপুল অবদান হারিয়ে যায়,যা পরিমাপ করা হয় না।

JusticeMaker Bangladesh preparing to launch human rights training sessions

2010 Asia JusticeMakers Fellow from Bangladesh Adv. Shahanur Islam has completed preparations on training materials on torture and human rights. Mr. Shahanur, who is also the executive director of the Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights (BIHR), will organize training sessions for different professionals in respective fields, such as lawyers, prison and police officials, judicial representatives and journalists, to increase their capacity as well as their knowledge about the international human rights instruments available to them.

গার্মেন্টসে শ্রমিক আন্দোলন: মালিকদের ‘ষড়যন্ত্র তত্ত্ব’ ও বাস্তবতা

আশুলিয়ার পোশাক কারখানায় সাম্প্রতিক কালে সংঘটিত শ্রমিক আন্দোলনের বিষয়ে বেশ কিছুদিন যাবত বিভিন্ন পত্রিকা, ফেসবুক, ব্লগসহ বিভিন্ন টিভি চ্যানেলে এ আন্দোলনের যৌক্তিকতার পক্ষে বিপক্ষে সরগরম আলোচনা চলছে। বিভিন্ন আলোচনার মধ্যে বরাবরের মত এ আন্দোলনের পিছনে পোশাক শিল্প ধ্বংসের সুদূর প্রসারী ষড়যন্ত্র, বহি:শক্তির ইন্ধন ইত্যাদি বিষয়গুলো জোড়সরে উঠে এসেছে। বিশেষ করে সরকার ও পোশাক শিল্প মালিকগন মিডিয়ার সহযোগিতায় ‘ষড়যন্ত্র তত্ত্ব’ হাজির করে মিথ্যা প্রচারনার মাধ্যমে শ্রমিকদের নায্য সংগ্রামকে কালিমা লিপ্ত করার অপচেষ্টা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে। অতীতেও বিভিন্ন সময় শ্রমিক আন্দোলনের বিরুদ্ধে প্রচারনা ছিল। কিন্তু এবার গার্মেন্টস মালিক ও সরকার প্রচারনা কৌশলকে সংগঠিত রূপ দিয়ে প্রতিযুদ্ধের আকারে হাজির করেন।

Police authorities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) have denied to register a General Diary submitted regarding continuous threats made against Mr Milon Chakma – the only complainant to register a First Information Report regarding the February and April arson attacks investigated and reported by GHRD & JusticeMakers Bangladesh that left hundreds of indigenous Jumma in The CHT region homeless.

Government security forces stand idle as indigenous communities attacked in Bangladesh

Houses burnt to ashes in arson attack on Jumma minority communities in Rangamati and Khagrachari, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh Over one hundred houses and one school were  burnt to ashes in two different attacks against  indigenous minority communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh in February and April leaving hundreds of indigenous men women and children injured and homeless. The attacks were instigated by some 200-300 Muslim Bengali settlers, following the death of a Bengali settler, Saber Ali, which the settlers blamed the indigenous people for. There is suspicion that Saber Ali was killed by the Bengali settlers to provide an excuse to evict the indigenous peoples from the area.

শিশু হত্যার মিথ্যে অভিযোগে ষড়যন্ত্রমূলকভাবে গত ২4 আগস্ট ২০১১ ইং তারিখে দিনাজপুর মেডিকেল কলেজের সহকারী অধ্যাপক ডাঃ মোঃ আবুল কালাম আজাদকে গ্রেফতার করে জেল হাজতে প্রেরন করেন। এসময় তিনি জেল হাজতে অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়লে অভিযুক্ত ভিক্তিমের স্ত্রী মোছাঃ মালেকা বানু দ্রুত ন্যায় বিচার প্রাপ্তির লক্ষ্যে যথাযথ তদন্ত সাপেক্ষে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা গ্রহনের জন্য মানবাধিকার প্রতিষ্ঠান বাংলাদেশ ইন্সটিটিউট অব হিউম্যান রাইটস্‌ (বিআইএইচআর), গ্লোবাল হিউম্যান রাইটস ডিফেন্স (জিএইচআরডি) ও জাষ্টিসমেকার্স বাংলাদেশ নিকট গত ২৭ আগস্ট ২০১১ ইং তারিখে আবেদন করেন। 

বিষয়টির গুরুত্ত্ব অনুধাবন করে বিআইএইচআর, জিএইচআরডি ও জাষ্টিসমেকার্স বাংলাদেশ কর্তৃপক্ষ যৌথভাবে ঘটনাটি সরেজমিনে তথ্যানুসন্ধানের সিদ্ধান্ত গ্রহন করেন এবং এডভোকেট শাহানুর ইসলামের নেতৃত্বে তিন সদস্যবিশিষ্ট একটি তথ্যানুসন্ধান দল গত তিন মাস যাবত ঘটনাটি অনুসন্ধান করেন।
