Shahanur Islam is a lawyer, human rights defender, and blogger from Bangladesh. He is Secretary General and Honorary Executive Director of the Bangladesh Institute for Human Rights (BIHR) and founder of JusticeMakers Bangladesh. His work focuses in particular on minority rights, LGBT rights and cases of torture, killings and enforced disappearances by law enforcement.

Due to its activity, Islam has received many threats, has been attacked, hindered and even attacked, as well as involved in falsely constructed cases.

On 26th of August 2020 around at 1:25 pm, Mr. Shahanur Islam, a human rights lawyer in Bangladesh was attacked by a group of politically-motivated terrorists at the court premises of Naogaon district in the northern part of Bangladesh.

Mr. Islam was taking part in the hearing against Md. Jahurul Islam, Member of District Parishad (district level highest local government unit), Naogaon alleging forgery of court document (forgery of signature of court issued summons) at the learned Judicial Magistrate Cognizance Court No. 05, Naogaon and the learned court ordered him to jail custody. The police then took him out from the court room.

Call for an investigation into Bangladesh Baul music room fire

On 18 May 2020, the Ashor Ghor (music room) of Baul singer Ranesh Thakur was set on fire in an apparent arson attack, reported the Dhaka Tribune. Reports suggest that the incident occurred in the Sunamganj district Derai Upazila and resulted in the building structure and its musical contents, such as monochords, harmoniums and drums, being burnt to ashes by unidentified persons.

কেমন আছে বাংলাদেশের সমকামীরা?

২০১৬ সালে ঢাকার কলাবাগানে দুর্বৃত্তরা কুপিয়ে হত্যা করে সমকামী অধিকারকর্মী জুলহাজ মান্নান ও তাঁর বন্ধু মাহবুব তনয়কে৷ এরপর থেকে বাংলাদেশে সমকামী আর তাঁদের নিয়ে কাজ করা মানবাধিকার কর্মীরা নিরাপত্তাহীনতায় ভুগছেন৷ বাংলাদেশে সমকামীদের অধিকার নিয়ে সোচ্চার ছিলেন জুলহাজ মান্নান৷ ২০১৪ সাল থেকে তাঁর সম্পাদনায় বের হতে শুরু করে এলজিবিটিদের নিয়ে প্রথম পত্রিকা ‘রূপবান'৷ ২০১৬ সালের ২৫ এপ্রিল কলাবাগানের লেক সার্কাস রোডের এক বাসায় ঢুকে এই ইউএসএইড কর্মকর্তা ও তাঁর বন্ধু নাট্যকর্মী মাহবুব তনয়কে হত্যা করা হয়৷ তিন বছর পর এসে সম্প্রতি অভিযোগপত্র চূড়ান্ত করেছে

Shahanur Islam, Honorary Executive Director of Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights and also a leading human rights lawyer, blogger and LGBT campaigner in Bangladesh attend the 7th Asia Pacific Consultation on refugee rights.  The consultation has been held at Hotel Narai, Bangkok, Thailand from 22 to 25 October 2018, organised by Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network.

সমকামীতার বৈধতাঃ ভারতীর সুপ্রীমকোর্ট প্রদান করতে পারলে, বাংলাদেশ সুপ্রীম কোর্ট পারবে না কেন?

গত ১৫ অক্টোবর ২০১৭ ইং তারিখে আমার লিখা “সমকামী সাজ্জাদের মৃর্ত্যুর জন্য দায়ী কে? শীর্ষক প্রবন্ধ দেশের শীর্ষস্থানীয় জনপ্রিয় অনলাইন নিউজ পোর্টাল পরিবর্তন ডট কম এ প্রকাশিত হয়।  প্রবন্ধটি প্রকাশিত হওয়ার পর বিভিন্ন মহলের সাধুবাদ প্রাপ্তিসহ অনেকের নিকট থেকে বিভিন্নভাবে হুমকি পাওয়ার সাথে সাথে গত ২৫ আক্টোবর ২০১৭ ইং তারিখে একই নিউজ পোর্টালে জনৈক বিশেষজ্ঞ আইনজীবী হিসাবে পরিচয়দানকারী অ্যাডভোকেট আব্দুর রহমান (রাহীল) “সমকামিতা জিনগত নয়, মনোবিকার” শীর্ষক একটি কাউন্টার প্রবন্ধ প্রকাশ করেন। 

সমকামী ব্যক্তির প্রতি বৈষম্য ও সহিংসতার প্রতিকার কি?

লেসবিয়ান, গে, বাইসেক্সুয়াল ও ট্রান্সজেন্ডার ব্যক্তির (সমকামী-যৌনপ্রবৃত্তিগত সংখ্যালঘু) প্রতি সহিংসতা ও বৈষম্য শুধু বাংলাদেশে নয়, সারা বিশ্বে আজ নিত্য নৈমত্তিক ব্যাপার হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে।  একটি পরিসংখ্যানে দেখা গিয়েছে যে, ২০১২ ইং সালে সারা বিশ্বে ২৬৫ জন সমকামী ব্যক্তি শুধুমাত্র তাদের যৌন প্রবৃত্তির কারণে হত্যার শিকার হয়েছে।  যা তার আগের বছরের চেয়ে ২০ ভাগ বেশী এবং সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ ইসলাম ধর্মাম্বলী জনসংখ্যা বিশিষ্ট রাষ্ট্রে সমকামি ব্যক্তির প্রতি নির্যাতন, বৈষম্য এবং হত্যার ঘটনা বেশী।
