| The 8th of March 2010, marks the occasion of the International Women’s Day (IWD), which is celebrated worldwide. It was launched by the UN in 1913 as a means of promoting and protecting the equal rights of women globally. Incidents of violence against minority women, such as rape and abduction, were reported during February, in Bangladesh. In most of these cases the perpetrators were in a more powerful position than the victims as they were members of law enforcement agencies or political parties. Highly corrupt legal institutions is one of the main causes for the lack of a proper protection system for Bangladeshi citizens and women’s marginalised situation in Bangladesh, due to religious traditions, social injustice, thus making them more vulnerable. The widespread impunity in cases regarding violence against women encourages these continuous violations. There is still a high level of sexual harassment in Bangladesh, which is detailed in Odhikar’s month report. For example, there was an incident reported about a Dalit woman who was raped by a policeman. |

(GHRD) is very concerned regarding the news we received from the Bangladesh
Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) about the gang-rape of an indigenous 15-year
old girl.
The girl was abducted outside of
her home, on the 26th of February, by five local Bengali leaders at Bandra
village in Moddhonagar police station under Sunamgong district, according to
their investigation. The girl was taken to a nearby river where she was
repeatedly raped until she became unconscious. When she was found later that
evening she was still unconscious. On the 27th February the girl’s family tried
to lodge a complaint against the perpetrators at Moddhonagar Police station, but
the officer in charge refused to file it.
GANG RAPE:A Fifteen year old indigenous girl from the Hazong community was gang raped: Victim & her family members are being intimidated to withdraw the case.
A fifteen year old indigenous
girl from the Hazong community has been gang raped by a gang of local Bengali
lechers at Bandra village in Moddhonagar police station under Sunamgong
district. On 26 February 2010
around 6.30 pm , Angoli Hajong,
daughter of Shailon Hazong was abducted while washing her face at the tube well
in front of her house. Her family at the time was engaged in their daily chores
outside of the house. She was taken to the baank of nearby Moheskhali

Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) wishes to
express its deepest concern over the brutal attacks against Jumma villagers by
the military forces and Bengali settlers in Baghaihat area in Rangamati,
Bangladesh on 19-20 February 2010. It is reported that at least five Jumma
villagers were killed and many were wounded in the attack. Jumma houses
including a Buddhist temple and a church were burnt to ashes, according to the
information received by GHRD.

ORDER BY NHRC: Regarding to the case of Adv. Rabindra Ghosh.
National human Rights Commission
has issued an order on January 20, 2010
regarding the case of harassment of Adv. Rabindra Ghosh. The order stated that the allegation received
from the Global Human Rights Defence and Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights (BIHR)
has been reviewed hereby and the commission thinks that it should be
investigated by an Additional Inspector General of Police (Ad. IGP). It also requested
to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bangladesh February 28, 2010
regarding the action taken by IGP.

National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh has taken the allegation regarding to case arbitrary arrest, maltreatment and harassment of Mr. Shahanur Islam, Executive Director, BIHR by Policemen as cognizance and today issues an order to commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to take proper action by impartial investigation by February 22, 2010.
