Paris, France – June 22, 2025: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), a France-based human rights organization, expresses its deep concern and strong condemnation over the death of Sheikh Jewel (45) in police custody at Muradnagar Police Station in Kumilla, Bangladesh, on June 19, 2025. Sheikh Jewel, a tech entrepreneur who operated a broadband internet business in his home village of Bangra, reportedly died following torture while in police custody, according to statements from his family.
JMBF firmly believes that this incident constitutes a grave violation of fundamental human rights and is a chilling reminder of the entrenched culture of impunity, abuse of authority, and systemic lack of accountability within Bangladesh’s law enforcement institutions. The death of a citizen at the hands of the very authorities entrusted to protect them raises alarming questions about the rule of law and human rights conditions in the country.
Renowned French human rights activist and Chief Advisor of JMBF Robert Simon, stated, “The death of a civilian in police custody in Bangladesh is deeply disturbing. It is not merely a domestic issue but a clear violation of international human rights obligations. The Government of Bangladesh must recognize that a nation’s moral standing is reflected in the conduct of its law enforcement agencies. We demand an independent, thorough, and transparent investigation, and insist that those responsible be brought to justice without delay.”
Bangladeshi human rights lawyer and JMBF Founding President Advocate Shahannur Islam stated, “Sheikh Jewel’s death is emblematic of a broader and deeply troubling pattern of extrajudicial killings and custodial abuse in Bangladesh. This is not an isolated event, but a manifestation of deep institutional and state-level failures. We call for an impartial, internationally monitored investigation; immediate prosecution of the responsible officers; and full compensation to the victim’s family. Government inaction in such cases perpetuates a culture of impunity and opens the floodgates to further violations.”
JMBF emphasizes that unless the perpetrators of Sheikh Jewel’s death are held fully accountable, such atrocities will likely recur, undermining both the social contract and the credibility of law enforcement. This is not simply the death of an individual—it is a direct and violent blow to the very essence of human rights.

On June 19, 2025, Sheikh Jewel (45), a resident of Bangra village in Kumilla’s Muradnagar upazila, allegedly died as a result of torture while in police custody. He was the son of the late Sheikh Golam Sarwar and ran a broadband internet business in the local area. His family claims that after his arrest, he was physically tortured by police, ultimately leading to his death.
According to police accounts, five individuals were arrested in Bangra on suspicion of drug use. Seventy yaba tablets were reportedly recovered, and the detainees, including Jewel, were taken to Muradnagar Police Station. While in custody, Sheikh Jewel reportedly became ill and was transferred to the Upazila Health Complex at 8:50 p.m., where he was pronounced dead by doctors.
His cousin, local BNP leader Sheikh Shafiqul Islam, stated that Jewel had been arrested by Sub-Inspector Al-Amin. Later, the officer informed them that Jewel had been taken to the hospital. Upon arrival, the family found him already dead.
Jewel’s wife, Shilpi Begum, recounted, “After noon, I heard he had been arrested. I went to the station and saw him—he was well. He told me, ‘I haven’t done anything; please try to get me out.’ Later, we were told he was dead. A healthy person doesn’t just die like that. He was tortured to death.”

গত ১৯ জুন ২০২৫, বৃহস্পতিবার কুমিল্লার মুরাদনগর থানায় পুলিশি নির্যাতনে শেখ জুয়েল (৪৫) নামে এক ব্যক্তির মৃত্যুর অভিযোগ উঠেছে। তিনি উপজেলার বাঙ্গরা গ্রামের শেখ বাড়ির প্রয়াত শেখ গোলাম সারোয়ারের ছেলে এবং এলাকায় ব্রডব্যান্ড ইন্টারনেট সংযোগের ব্যবসার সঙ্গে যুক্ত ছিলেন। পরিবারের দাবি, পুলিশি নির্যাতনের ফলেই তাঁর মৃত্যু হয়েছে।
পুলিশ জানায়, সেদিন বিকেলে উপজেলার বাঙ্গরা এলাকা থেকে পাঁচজনকে মাদক সেবনের সময় গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। তাঁদের কাছ থেকে ৭০টি ইয়াবা উদ্ধার করা হয়। পরে তাঁদের থানায় নেওয়া হয়। সেখানে শেখ জুয়েল অসুস্থ বোধ করলে রাত ৮টা ৫০ মিনিটে তাঁকে উপজেলা স্বাস্থ্য কমপ্লেক্সে নেওয়া হয় এবং চিকিৎসক তাঁকে মৃত ঘোষণা করেন।
নিহতের চাচাতো ভাই ও স্থানীয় বিএনপি নেতা শেখ সফিকুল ইসলাম জানান, বাঙ্গরা বাজার থানার এসআই আল-আমিনের নেতৃত্বে শেখ জুয়েলকে গ্রেপ্তার করা হয়। পরে এসআই আল-আমিন জানান, জুয়েলকে হাসপাতালে নেওয়া হয়েছে। সেখানে গিয়ে তাঁকে মৃত অবস্থায় পাওয়া যায়।
শেখ জুয়েলের স্ত্রী শিল্পী বেগম বলেন, “দুপুরের পর জানতে পারি, পুলিশ তাঁকে ধরে নিয়ে গেছে। থানায় গিয়ে দেখা করি। তিনি সুস্থ ছিলেন। আমাকে বললেন, ‘আমি কিছু করিনি, আমাকে ছাড়ানোর ব্যবস্থা কর।’ এরপর খবর পাই, তিনি মারা গেছেন। একজন সুস্থ মানুষ এভাবে মারা যেতে পারে না। তাঁকে নির্যাতন করে হত্যা করা হয়েছে।”

Paris, France – 22 juin 2025 : JusticeMakers Bangladesh en France (JMBF), une organisation de défense des droits humains basée en France, exprime sa profonde inquiétude et sa vive condamnation suite au décès de Sheikh Jewel (45 ans) en garde à vue au poste de police de Muradnagar à Kumilla, Bangladesh, le 19 juin 2025. Sheikh Jewel, entrepreneur technologique qui exploitait une entreprise de fourniture d’internet haut débit dans son village natal de Bangra, serait décédé à la suite de tortures subies en garde à vue, selon les déclarations de sa famille.JMBF est fermement convaincu que cet incident constitue une grave violation des droits humains fondamentaux et rappelle de manière alarmante la culture enracinée d’impunité, l’abus d’autorité et le manque systémique de responsabilité au sein des institutions policières du Bangladesh. La mort d’un citoyen aux mains des autorités mêmes chargées de sa protection soulève de sérieuses questions quant à l’état de droit et à la situation des droits humains dans le pays.
Le célèbre militant français des droits humains et conseiller principal de JMBF, Robert Simon, a déclaré : « La mort d’un civil en garde à vue au Bangladesh est profondément inquiétante. Ce n’est pas simplement un problème interne, mais une violation claire des obligations internationales en matière de droits humains. Le gouvernement du Bangladesh doit reconnaître que la stature morale d’une nation se reflète dans le comportement de ses forces de l’ordre. L’avocat bangladais spécialisé en droits humains et président fondateur de JMBF, Maître Shahannur Islam , a ajouté : « La mort de Sheikh Jewel illustre un schéma plus large et profondément préoccupant d’exécutions extrajudiciaires et d’abus en détention au Bangladesh. Ce n’est pas un événement isolé, mais la manifestation d’échecs institutionnels et étatiques profonds. Nous appelons à une enquête impartiale, supervisée au niveau international, à la poursuite immédiate des agents responsables et à une compensation intégrale pour la famille de la victime. L’inaction du gouvernement dans de tels cas perpétue une culture d’impunité et ouvre la porte à de nouvelles violations. »
JMBF souligne que, à moins que les auteurs de la mort de Sheikh Jewel ne soient tenus pleinement responsables, de telles atrocités risquent de se reproduire, sapant à la fois le contrat social et la crédibilité des forces de l’ordre. Ce n’est pas simplement la mort d’un individu — c’est un coup direct et violent porté à l’essence même des droits humains.
JMBF appelle toutes les organisations nationales et internationales de défense des droits humains, les mécanismes de l’ONU ainsi que les médias à poursuivre activement la vérité sur cet incident et à soutenir les efforts pour construire un système de justice plus humain, transparent et responsable au Bangladesh.
