UN SUBMISSION: JMBF Submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Ban on Bangladesh Awami League Activities

Examining restrictions on freedom of peaceful assembly, association, expression and electoral participation affecting the Bangladesh Awami League and its supporters.

Paris, France | 7 December 2025:
JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) presents its submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association concerning the May 2025 ban on Bangladesh Awami League activities and related human rights concerns. The report examines restrictions on political organising, the suspension of the party’s electoral registration, reported arrests and allegations of arbitrary detention. Its legal analysis assesses these measures against Bangladesh’s constitutional framework and obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). JMBF calls for a review of blanket restrictions, protection of peaceful political activity, individual review of detention cases, fair trials and effective remedies, while supporting accountability for serious human rights violations through independent and impartial proceedings.
