On the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, the Brahmanbaria Film Society had organized a screening of the film on 30 May 2026 (Saturday) at Annada Government High School in Brahmanbaria town. The organization, formed by students from various educational institutions in the district, has long been engaged in promoting film culture and organizing film screenings under the banner of “Bhatghumer Cinema Adda.”
However, following the announcement of the screening, a campaign opposing the event was launched on social media by some students affiliated with the Qawmi Chhatra Oikya Parishad (a coalition of students associated with Qawmi madrasa institutions) and members of conservative religious groups. According to available information, media reports, and publicly circulated social media posts, the campaign included the use of crossed-out film posters, calls to stop the screening, the dissemination of negative and inflammatory statements, and attempts to portray the cultural event as objectionable from a religious perspective. As a result, an atmosphere of fear and tension was created.
Against this backdrop, on the evening of 29 May 2026 (Friday)—just one day before the scheduled screening—the Brahmanbaria district administration announced its decision to “temporarily suspend” the event. The Deputy Commissioner informed the media that the issue had become a matter of national discussion and that, given the widespread opposition and expressions of anger on social media, it would not be appropriate to proceed with the screening at that time.
JMBF believes that the decision to suspend the screening, rather than ensuring a safe environment for the lawful cultural event to take place, under pressure from fundamentalist groups, sets a deeply troubling and dangerous precedent for Bangladesh’s cultural sphere. Suspending a lawful, censorship-approved, and peaceful cultural event in response to organized fundamentalist pressure and inflammatory social media campaigns effectively amounts to surrendering cultural space to extremist forces. Disagreement with a film or artistic work should be expressed through criticism, discussion, or alternative viewpoints—not through intimidation and pressure aimed at shutting down cultural events. Such actions are contrary to democratic values.
JMBF is further deeply concerned that the constitutional and legal right to screen a state-approved film could not be effectively guaranteed in practice. This sends a dangerous message that organized online campaigns and fundamentalist pressure can be used to halt cultural activities. This is not merely the suspension of a film screening; it constitutes a direct attack on cultural freedom, free thought, and freedom of expression in Bangladesh.
JMBF’s Founding President and prominent human rights lawyer, Advocate Shahanur Islam, stated:
“The current BNP government and the concerned authorities bear political and moral responsibility for this incident. The suspension of a lawful cultural event in the face of extremist pressure, instead of ensuring citizens’ constitutional right to organize and participate in such events, demonstrates the state’s failure to take a firm stand in defense of cultural freedom. If the government fails to effectively confront pressure from fundamentalist groups, there is a serious risk of further interference and attacks on art, culture, literature, cinema, and freedom of thought in the future.”
He further added:
“The Constitution of Bangladesh guarantees freedom of expression, the right to participate in cultural activities, and a secular democratic state system. In that light, allowing extremist or fundamentalist groups to impose informal censorship on cultural activities is inconsistent with the constitutional obligations of the state.”
JMBF’s Urgent Calls:
- To ensure that the screening of Bonolota Express is rescheduled without delay and that a safe environment for its exhibition is guaranteed;
- To conduct a thorough investigation into the activities of individuals involved in spreading hatred, intimidation, and incitement through social media;
- To bring those responsible for obstructing cultural activities to justice and ensure exemplary punishment;
- To guarantee the safety, security, and freedom of artists, filmmakers, and cultural organizations;
- To take effective measures to protect Bangladesh’s cultural space from fundamentalist interference and informal censorship.
JMBF firmly believes that no compromise can be made on artistic freedom, freedom of thought, and freedom of expression if Bangladesh is to uphold the spirit of the Liberation War, constitutional values, and a democratic future. JMBF condemns all forms of fundamentalist activities associated with this incident and expresses its full solidarity with Bangladesh’s progressive cultural movement, artistic community, and all citizens committed to freedom, pluralism, and democratic values.

পবিত্র ঈদুল আজহা উপলক্ষে ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়া ফিল্ম সোসাইটির উদ্যোগে ৩০ মে ২০২৬ (শনিবার) ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়া শহরের অন্নদা সরকারি উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ে চলচ্চিত্রটির প্রদর্শনীর আয়োজন করা হয়েছিল। জেলার বিভিন্ন শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানের শিক্ষার্থীদের নিয়ে গঠিত এই সংগঠনটি দীর্ঘদিন ধরে ‘ভাতঘুমের সিনেমা আড্ডা’ শিরোনামে চলচ্চিত্র প্রদর্শন ও চলচ্চিত্রচর্চার কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করে আসছে।
কিন্তু প্রদর্শনীর ঘোষণার পর সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমে কওমি ছাত্র ঐক্য পরিষদের সঙ্গে সংশ্লিষ্ট কিছু শিক্ষার্থী এবং ধর্মীয় রক্ষণশীল গোষ্ঠীর সদস্যরা ‘বনলতা এক্সপ্রেস’-এর প্রদর্শনীর বিরুদ্ধে প্রচারণা শুরু করে। প্রাপ্ত তথ্য, বিভিন্ন গণমাধ্যমে প্রকাশিত প্রতিবেদন এবং সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমে প্রকাশ্যে প্রচারিত পোস্ট থেকে প্রতীয়মান হয় যে, এসব প্রচারণায় চলচ্চিত্রটির পোস্টারে ক্রস চিহ্ন ব্যবহার, প্রদর্শনী বন্ধের আহ্বান, নেতিবাচক ও উসকানিমূলক বক্তব্য প্রচার এবং সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মকাণ্ডকে ধর্মীয় দৃষ্টিকোণ থেকে প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ করার চেষ্টা করা হয়। এর ফলে একটি ভীতিকর ও উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ পরিস্থিতির সৃষ্টি হয়।
এই প্রেক্ষাপটে ২৯ মে ২০২৬ (শুক্রবার) সন্ধ্যায়, অর্থাৎ নির্ধারিত প্রদর্শনীর মাত্র একদিন আগে, ব্রাহ্মণবাড়িয়ার জেলা প্রশাসন অনুষ্ঠানটি “আপাতত স্থগিত” করার সিদ্ধান্ত ঘোষণা করে। জেলা প্রশাসক গণমাধ্যমকে জানান যে বিষয়টি জাতীয় আলোচনার বিষয় হয়ে উঠেছে এবং সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমে ব্যাপক বিরোধিতা ও ক্ষোভ প্রকাশের কারণে তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে প্রদর্শনীর আয়োজন সমীচীন হবে না বলে প্রশাসন মনে করেছে।
জেএমবিএফ মনে করে, চলচ্চিত্রটি প্রদর্শনের জন্য নিরাপদ পরিবেশ নিশ্চিত করার ব্যবস্থা না করে মৌলবাদী গোষ্ঠীর চাপে প্রশাসনের প্রদর্শনীটি স্থগিত করার ঘটনা বাংলাদেশের সাংস্কৃতিক অঙ্গনের জন্য অত্যন্ত উদ্বেগজনক এবং বিপজ্জনক দৃষ্টান্ত। একটি বৈধ, সেন্সর-অনুমোদিত এবং শান্তিপূর্ণ সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠানকে সংগঠিত মৌলবাদী চাপ ও সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমভিত্তিক উসকানিমূলক প্রচারণার মুখে স্থগিত করা কার্যত উগ্রবাদী শক্তির কাছে সাংস্কৃতিক পরিসরকে সমর্পণ করার শামিল। কোনো চলচ্চিত্র বা শিল্পকর্মের সঙ্গে মতপার্থক্য থাকলে তার জবাব হতে পারে সমালোচনা, আলোচনা কিংবা বিকল্প মতপ্রকাশ; কিন্তু ভয়ভীতি ও চাপ সৃষ্টি করে প্রদর্শনী বন্ধ করা গণতান্ত্রিক মূল্যবোধের পরিপন্থী।
জেএমবিএফ আরও গভীর উদ্বেগের সঙ্গে লক্ষ্য করছে যে, রাষ্ট্রের অনুমোদনপ্রাপ্ত একটি চলচ্চিত্র প্রদর্শনের সাংবিধানিক ও আইনগত অধিকার বাস্তবে নিশ্চিত করা যায়নি। এর ফলে একটি বিপজ্জনক বার্তা গেছে যে, সংগঠিত অনলাইন প্রচারণা ও মৌলবাদী চাপের মাধ্যমে সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মকাণ্ড বন্ধ করিয়ে দেওয়া সম্ভব। এটি শুধু একটি চলচ্চিত্রের প্রদর্শনী বন্ধ হওয়ার ঘটনা নয়; এটি বাংলাদেশের সাংস্কৃতিক স্বাধীনতা, মুক্তচিন্তা এবং মতপ্রকাশের অধিকারের ওপর সরাসরি আঘাত।
জেএমবিএফ-এর প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সভাপতি, বিশিষ্ট মানবাধিকার আইনজীবী অ্যাডভোকেট শাহানূর ইসলাম বলেন,
“বর্তমান বিএনপি সরকার ও সংশ্লিষ্ট প্রশাসনের ওপর এই ঘটনার রাজনৈতিক ও নৈতিক দায় বর্তায়। একটি বৈধ সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজনের সাংবিধানিক অধিকার নিশ্চিত করার পরিবর্তে উগ্রবাদী চাপের মুখে অনুষ্ঠান স্থগিত হওয়া প্রমাণ করে যে রাষ্ট্র সাংস্কৃতিক স্বাধীনতা রক্ষায় যথেষ্ট দৃঢ়তা প্রদর্শন করতে পারেনি। সরকার যদি মৌলবাদী গোষ্ঠীগুলোর চাপ মোকাবিলায় কার্যকর অবস্থান গ্রহণে ব্যর্থ হয়, তবে ভবিষ্যতে শিল্প-সংস্কৃতি, সাহিত্য, চলচ্চিত্র এবং মুক্তচিন্তার ওপর আরও বড় ধরনের হস্তক্ষেপ ও আক্রমণের ঝুঁকি তৈরি হবে।”
তিনি আরও বলেন,
“বাংলাদেশের সংবিধান মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতা, সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মকাণ্ডে অংশগ্রহণের অধিকার এবং অসাম্প্রদায়িক গণতান্ত্রিক রাষ্ট্রব্যবস্থার নিশ্চয়তা প্রদান করেছে। সেই আলোকে কোনো উগ্রবাদী বা মৌলবাদী গোষ্ঠীকে সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মকাণ্ডের ওপর অনানুষ্ঠানিক সেন্সরশিপ আরোপের সুযোগ দেওয়া রাষ্ট্রের সাংবিধানিক দায়িত্বের সঙ্গে অসঙ্গতিপূর্ণ।”
জাস্টিসমেকার্স বাংলাদেশ ইন ফ্রান্স (জেএমবিএফ)-এর জরুরি আহ্বান:
১. ‘বনলতা এক্সপ্রেস’-এর প্রদর্শনীর নতুন তারিখ ঘোষণা ও নিরাপদ পরিবেশ নিশ্চিত করা হোক;২. সামাজিক যোগাযোগমাধ্যমে ঘৃণা, ভয়ভীতি ও উসকানিমূলক প্রচারণার সঙ্গে জড়িত ব্যক্তিদের কর্মকাণ্ড তদন্ত করা হোক;৩. সাংস্কৃতিক কর্মকাণ্ডে বাধা সৃষ্টিকারীদের বিরুদ্ধে আইনানুগ ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করে দৃষ্টান্তমূলক শাস্তি প্রদান করা হোক;৪. শিল্পী, নির্মাতা ও সাংস্কৃতিক সংগঠনগুলোর নিরাপত্তা ও স্বাধীনতা নিশ্চিত করা হোক;৫. বাংলাদেশের সাংস্কৃতিক পরিসরকে মৌলবাদী হস্তক্ষেপ ও অনানুষ্ঠানিক সেন্সরশিপ থেকে সুরক্ষিত রাখার প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করা হোক।
জাস্টিসমেকার্স বাংলাদেশ ইন ফ্রান্স (জেএমবিএফ) দৃঢ়ভাবে বিশ্বাস করে যে, বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধের চেতনা, সাংবিধানিক মূল্যবোধ এবং গণতান্ত্রিক ভবিষ্যৎ রক্ষার স্বার্থে শিল্প-সংস্কৃতি, মুক্তচিন্তা ও মতপ্রকাশের স্বাধীনতার প্রশ্নে কোনো আপস করা চলবে না। জেএমবিএফ এই ঘটনার সঙ্গে জড়িত সকল প্রকার মৌলবাদী অপতৎপরতার নিন্দা জানায় এবং বাংলাদেশের প্রগতিশীল সাংস্কৃতিক আন্দোলন, শিল্পীসমাজ ও স্বাধীনচেতা নাগরিকদের প্রতি পূর্ণ সংহতি প্রকাশ করছে।

ALERTE BANGLADESH : La JMBF exprime sa profonde inquiétude face à la suspension de la projection du film Bonolota Express à Brahmanbaria
Paris, France | 1er juin 2026 : JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) exprime sa profonde inquiétude, son indignation et sa vive protestation suite à la suspension de la projection prévue du film Bonolota Express à Brahmanbaria sous la pression de groupes fondamentalistes.
À l’occasion de l’Aïd al-Adha, la Brahmanbaria Film Society avait organisé une projection du film le 30 mai 2026 (samedi) à l’école gouvernementale Annada de Brahmanbaria. Cette organisation, composée d’étudiants issus de différents établissements d’enseignement du district, œuvre depuis longtemps à la promotion de la culture cinématographique à travers des projections et des discussions sous la bannière de « Bhatghumer Cinema Adda ».
Cependant, après l’annonce de la projection, une campagne d’opposition a été lancée sur les réseaux sociaux par certains étudiants affiliés au Qawmi Chhatra Oikya Parishad (une coalition d’étudiants associés aux institutions de madrasa qawmi) ainsi que par des membres de groupes religieux conservateurs. Selon les informations disponibles, les reportages des médias et les publications diffusées publiquement sur les réseaux sociaux, cette campagne comprenait l’utilisation d’affiches du film barrées d’une croix, des appels à l’annulation de la projection, la diffusion de déclarations négatives et incendiaires, ainsi que des tentatives de présenter l’événement culturel comme contraire aux valeurs religieuses. Cette campagne a créé un climat de peur et de tension.
Dans ce contexte, dans la soirée du 29 mai 2026 (vendredi) — soit un jour seulement avant la projection prévue — l’administration du district de Brahmanbaria a annoncé sa décision de « suspendre temporairement » l’événement. Le Commissaire du district a déclaré aux médias que la question était devenue un sujet de débat national et que, compte tenu de l’ampleur de l’opposition et des réactions hostiles exprimées sur les réseaux sociaux, il n’était pas opportun de maintenir la projection à ce moment-là.
La JMBF estime que la décision de suspendre la projection, au lieu de garantir un environnement sûr permettant la tenue légale de cet événement culturel, sous la pression de groupes fondamentalistes, constitue un précédent profondément préoccupant et dangereux pour la sphère culturelle du Bangladesh. Suspendre un événement culturel légal, autorisé par les autorités de censure et organisé pacifiquement en réponse à des pressions fondamentalistes et à des campagnes de dénigrement sur les réseaux sociaux revient, dans les faits, à céder l’espace culturel aux forces extrémistes. Les désaccords avec une œuvre cinématographique ou artistique devraient s’exprimer par la critique, le débat ou des opinions alternatives, et non par l’intimidation et la pression visant à empêcher sa diffusion. De telles pratiques sont contraires aux valeurs démocratiques.
La JMBF est également profondément préoccupée par le fait que le droit constitutionnel et légal de projeter un film approuvé par l’État n’a pas pu être garanti dans la pratique. Cela envoie un message dangereux selon lequel des campagnes organisées en ligne et des pressions fondamentalistes peuvent suffire à faire annuler des activités culturelles. Il ne s’agit pas simplement de l’annulation d’une projection cinématographique ; il s’agit d’une atteinte directe à la liberté culturelle, à la liberté de pensée et à la liberté d’expression au Bangladesh.
Le président fondateur de la JMBF et éminent avocat des droits humains, Maître Shahanur Islam, a déclaré :
« Le gouvernement actuel du BNP ainsi que les autorités concernées portent une responsabilité politique et morale dans cet incident. La suspension d’un événement culturel légal sous la pression de groupes extrémistes, au lieu de garantir le droit constitutionnel des citoyens à organiser et à participer à de tels événements, démontre l’incapacité de l’État à défendre fermement la liberté culturelle. Si le gouvernement échoue à faire face efficacement aux pressions des groupes fondamentalistes, il existe un risque sérieux de nouvelles attaques et ingérences contre l’art, la culture, la littérature, le cinéma et la liberté de pensée. »
Il a ajouté :
« La Constitution du Bangladesh garantit la liberté d’expression, le droit de participer à la vie culturelle et les principes d’un État démocratique et laïque. Permettre à des groupes extrémistes ou fondamentalistes d’imposer une forme de censure informelle aux activités culturelles est incompatible avec les obligations constitutionnelles de l’État. »
Les appels urgents de la JMBF :
- Assurer la reprogrammation rapide de la projection de Bonolota Express et garantir un environnement sûr pour sa diffusion ;
- Mener une enquête approfondie sur les personnes impliquées dans la propagation de discours haineux, d’intimidation et d’incitation sur les réseaux sociaux ;
- Traduire en justice les responsables de l’entrave aux activités culturelles et veiller à ce qu’ils fassent l’objet de sanctions exemplaires ;
- Garantir la sécurité, la protection et la liberté des artistes, cinéastes et organisations culturelles ;
- Prendre des mesures efficaces afin de protéger l’espace culturel du Bangladesh contre les ingérences fondamentalistes et les formes de censure informelle.
La JMBF est fermement convaincue qu’aucun compromis ne peut être accepté en matière de liberté artistique, de liberté de pensée et de liberté d’expression si le Bangladesh souhaite préserver l’esprit de la Guerre de Libération, les valeurs constitutionnelles et son avenir démocratique. La JMBF condamne toutes les formes d’activités fondamentalistes associées à cet incident et exprime sa pleine solidarité avec le mouvement culturel progressiste du Bangladesh, la communauté artistique et tous les citoyens attachés à la liberté, au pluralisme et aux valeurs démocratiques.
