JMBF Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) 2024

Paris, France; November 20, 2024- On this Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) 2024, JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) solemnly honors the memory of transgender individuals who have tragically lost their lives to anti-transgender violence. While this day serves as a global observance, we particularly focus on the alarming rise in violence against transgender people in Bangladesh, where systemic discrimination and religious intolerance continue to devastate the transgender community.

Robert Simon, Chief Adviser of JMBF, emphasizes, "In Bangladesh, transgender individuals, particularly Hijra and other gender-diverse communities, suffer from relentless violence, social exclusion, and denial of basic human rights. Many are deprived of access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, forcing them into precarious and vulnerable situations. As we remember those we have lost, we renew our unwavering commitment to fighting against these injustices."

While some progress has been made—such as the recognition of a third gender—implementation remains limited, and societal acceptance lags far behind. The ongoing violence and marginalization of transgender people in Bangladesh demand urgent action, including stronger legal protections, comprehensive awareness campaigns, and efforts to promote inclusion.

Shahanur Islam, Founder and President of JMBF expresses deep concern, "Under the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, violence against transgender individuals has escalated, fueled by a troubling rise in Islamic fundamentalism. This extremism has emboldened acts of hate and deepened societal stigma, further isolating an already vulnerable community. True progress can only be achieved when this climate of intolerance is confronted head-on."

JMBF calls on the interim government of Bangladesh to take immediate and decisive steps to address the escalating violence and protect the rights and safety of all citizens. We also urge the international community to hold leaders accountable and stand with those fighting for justice and equality in Bangladesh.

As we honor the memory of those lost to anti-transgender violence, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to building a Bangladesh—and a world—where every individual can live freely, safely, and with dignity.

In solidarity,
JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF)
