Simultaneously, JMBF urges the Interim Government of Bangladesh to take immediate and effective steps to ensure the safety and security of Advocate Alamgir. JMBF also calls upon the authorities to swiftly arrest all individuals involved in issuing these threats, following a genuinely independent judicial investigation led by a Justice of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
According to credible information received from reliable sources, on 26 November 2025, at around 2:00 PM, three local leaders affiliated with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) visited Advocate Alamgir’s court chamber at Koilash Bosh Lane in Shakharibazar, Dhaka. During the visit, they issued direct threats and pressured him to use his influence to secure the acquittal of the daughter of one of the perpetrators in a drug trafficking case in which he had previously served as a Public Prosecutor on behalf of the State.
When Advocate Alamgir explained that he no longer holds the position of Public Prosecutor and therefore has no authority or capacity to influence the case, the individuals continued to intimidate him with serious threats of physical harm. They eventually left his chamber, but only after issuing a severe final warning, leaving him in genuine fear for his personal safety.
This is not the first time Advocate Alamgir has faced persecution by state and non-state actors. He has been continuously targeted due to his professional work as a lawyer and human rights defender. JMBF previously issued an alert on this matter on 12 November. Read the alert click here.
JMBF believes that this incident represents a blatant attempt to coerce a legal professional into interfering with judicial proceedings—an act that directly undermines the rule of law in Bangladesh. Such intimidation violates multiple international human rights standards, including the UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, and Bangladesh’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
JMBF stresses that lawyers must be able to perform their professional duties without facing threats, coercion, or violence, and that human rights defenders must be able to carry out their work safely and independently.
JMBF therefore urges the authorities to take immediate action to protect Advocate Alamgir, to conduct a credible and impartial investigation into this incident, and to bring the perpetrators to justice. Failure to respond appropriately will not only endanger one individual but also send a dangerous message to legal professionals and human rights defenders across the country.
JMBF stands firmly beside Advocate Alamgir and is closely monitoring developments in his situation.
