Paris, France; April 02, 2025: Advocate Shahanur Islam, a prominent Bangladeshi human rights lawyer and the founder president of JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), held a virtual bilateral meeting with Madame Emilie Palahouane, Political Affairs and Cooperation Attachée of the Embassy of France in Dhaka on Thursday morning.
During the one-and-a-half-hour discussion, Mr. Islam provided an overview of the human rights situation in Bangladesh under the current interim government, led by former Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
He raised critical concerns regarding LGBTQI+ rights, political repression against activists affiliated with the Bangladesh Awami League and its associated groups, and threats to media freedom, including the arbitrary arrests of journalists Sakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa on murder charges.
The meeting also addressed ongoing violence against ethnic and religious minority communities, the rise of Islamic extremism, and the positions of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on LGBTQI+ rights.
Additional concerns discussed included fabricated legal cases, arbitrary arrests of lawyers, mob violence, lynchings, and targeted attacks on Sufi communities, shrines, and cultural traditions such as Baul and Lalon music.
Mr. Islam also shared insights from his participation in the French government’s Marianne Initiative for Human Rights Defenders and outlined JMBF’s ongoing activities and future plans.
Madame Palahouane expressed her appreciation for the discussion and reaffirmed France’s commitment to human rights and justice. She assured that the French Embassy in Dhaka continues to monitor the human rights situation in Bangladesh and pledged ongoing dialogue and cooperation on these pressing issues.
